Horton Plains Sri Lanka

A highland plateau of unparalleled beauty, Horton Plains National Park is home to rare flora and fauna. Its most famous trek leads to World’s End, a dramatic escarpment with a sheer drop of 870 meters. The mist-covered Baker’s Falls adds to the park’s ethereal charm.

Attractions

The Galways Land Bird Sanctuary

Located near Horton Plains, this sanctuary is perfect for birdwatching. It is home to a variety of endemic and migratory bird species, including the Sri Lanka whistling thrush and orange-billed babbler.

Patana (Grassland Plains)

Horton Plains is known for its wide open grasslands or "patana," which stretch across the park’s flat plateau. These vast, rolling plains provide habitat for various species of wildlife and offer incredible views.

Trekking and Trails

There are several marked trails within the park:
World’s End Trail: A 9.5 km round trip taking about 3 hours, this is the most popular trail, leading to World’s End and Mini World’s End.
Baker’s Falls Trail: A 4 km round trip that takes about 1-2 hours, leading visitors to the stunning Baker’s Falls.
Horton Plains Loop: A longer 10 km loop that offers an immersive experience in the park’s natural beauty.

Wildlife Viewing

Horton Plains is home to several unique species of flora and fauna. It is one of the few places in Sri Lanka where you can spot sambar deer, wild boar, and the Sri Lankan leopard. Birdwatchers can also spot many endemic birds, such as the Sri Lanka blue magpie and yellow-eared bulbul.

The Forest of Horton Plains

The park’s diverse ecosystem includes cloud forests, grasslands, and marshes. As you trek through these areas, you'll encounter a variety of endemic species, including the Sri Lankan sambar deer and the purple-faced langur monkey.

Baker’s Falls

A picturesque waterfall located about 1.5 kilometers from the main entrance of the park. Baker’s Falls is named after Sir Samuel Baker, an explorer who discovered it. The falls are surrounded by lush vegetation, making it an excellent stop on the trekking trail.

Mini World’s End

A smaller but equally stunning viewpoint, Mini World’s End offers views similar to those of World’s End but with less of a trek. It’s an easier and less crowded alternative.

World’s End

A major highlight of Horton Plains, World’s End is a sheer precipice with a 1,000-meter drop offering panoramic views of the surrounding hills, valleys, and forests. The trek to World’s End is a popular activity, with breathtaking views along the way.
