Sri Lanka, the navigational hub of the Orient in the ancient world, is an island in the Indian Ocean located between 5°55´ and 9°55´ N latitude and 79°42´ and 81°52´ E longitude close to the southern tip of the Indian sub-continent. From north to south it has a maximum length of 447 km and at its widest point it measures 219 km. with a total land area of 65,610 sq. km. The Island enjoys pleasant tropical climate relatively hot in the plains and cooler in the central highlands.

The majority is Sinhalese (74%) who speak an Indo-Aryan language called Sinhala. Other major ethnic groups are Tamils (18.1%) and Moors (7.1%). Majority of the population is Buddhist (69.3%). Most of the Sri Lankans speak English.


Climatically, Sri Lanka has no off-season for tourists. Truly it is an ‘Island Paradise’. At sea level the temperature ranges from 25° to 28° C and in the hill country it varies from 12° to 16°C. Rainfall is received mainly during two monsoons with occasional inter-monsoonal showers. Sri Lanka follows decimal currency system in Rupees (Rs.) and cents (Cts.) with 100 cents equal to a rupee. Currency notes are available in the denominations of Rs. 2,10,20,50,100,200, 500, 1.000 and 5.000. Coins are issued in values of Cts.1,2,5,10, 25 and 50 and Rs.1,2,5, 10 and 100. The intervention currency continuously will be the US Dollar, EURO or English Pound.


Cotton garments are the ideal as Sri Lanka is a tropical island. However, viscose/cotton mixed garments are commonly worn. Light clothing is recommended in the lowland areas and light
woolen clothing is suitable in the hill country. A sun hat and sun glasses may help to escape the heat during day time.
